WHO DOES DAN PLAY WITH?

Whenever Dan meets a stranger--whether at the airport on one of his many flights, or at a train station somewhere in Europe on one of his travels-- he's often asked, "Who do you play with?"

The answer is: many people!

As a free-lance musician, Dan enjoys performing with friends all over the world.

For instance, in Europe, he appears as a "special guest" with various bands in Germany and the Netherlands.

In the States, Dan flies to various jazz parties and festivals to perform in all-star combinations assembled at those events. He also enjoys the discipline of rehearsing and performing with a very special group of four close friends...

THE REBECCA KILGORE QUARTET

That group of friends is the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet. This "big small" band has appeared internationally as "BED," an acronym for three of its four members. It was recently decided--unanimously--to change that name; mostly to clarify that the group is indeed a quartet!

Since vocalist Becky Kilgore generally fronts the band in its live performances, she was the logical choice for "canonization." (The band members' own shorthand for the group's name is the RK4).

In addition to Rebecca and Dan, the RK4 includes the irrepressible Eddie Erickson on guitar; plectrum banjo; and his own sensational vocals; and bassist Joel Forbes, who delights audiences with his all-business demeanor and his huge, all-acoustic bass sound.

THE LIST GOES ON

Ever since he led the Back Bay Jazz Band back at Newport Harbor High School, Dan has been active as a band leader. Today, Dan is the leader of a couple of swinging ensembles.

BLUE SWING

The first is his octet, Blue Swing. This exciting group features the four members of the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet, plus: trumpet; clarinet/sax; piano; and drums. Blue Swing recalls the fun, swinging style of bands in the '30s and '40s.  Look for Blue Swing on Arbors Records.

THE INTERNATIONAL SWING PARTY

The other group that Dan leads is a fun, loose, "floating crap game" of swinging American and European players who have performed all over the world under the umbrella heading, The International Swing Party. One such combination recorded a live CD during their 1999 appearance at the Blue Note jazz club in Hamburg, Germany. That CD ("Dan Barrett's International Swing Party") is available on Nagel-Heyer Records.

THE FULL MOON ORCHESTRA

Dan can also be heard with The Full Moon Orchestra, an eleven-piece band that recalls the "hot" jazz and dance bands of the 1920s and '30s.

More recently--in early 2010--Dan led a Swing Party combination comprised of stellar American and European players for an exciting two-week tour of Germany.  The "special  guest" with that edition of the International Swing Party was the eminent drummer (and erstwhile Count Basie percussionist), Butch Miles.
